2008 Town Centre Regeneration Team of the Year

The regeneration of Huddersfield has resulted in significant improvements in the town's performance in recent years.

The Town Centre Partnership Company has over 180 paying members and won the ATCM's partnership of the year award in 2008. Its approach recognises that there needs to be a balance between the health of the retail sector and other town centre uses including commercial, leisure, higher education and residential.

Huddersfield has seen major investment by Kirklees Council - thanks in large part to the efforts of Councillor Ken Simms - by the regional development agency and by the private sector. In addition, a £10m investment in the public realm has dramatically changed public perceptions of the town. Since 1996, footfall has grown by 20 per cent with a 5 per cent increase between 2006 and 2007. As a result of this strong economic performance and improved perceptions, Huddersfield is now attracting further investment in projects like the new Tesco store and Queensgate revival, a retail-led development incorporating a new library, art gallery and market hall.
